Install and setup data access

Manco .NET Licensing System consists of the several parts. Most of them are presented as separate installation packages are available for download: here. There is 1 major package which you should download and install: Manco.Licensing.zip. This package includes protection libraries for .NET Framework 2.0-3.5 and 4.0 (as separate DLLs), License Manager, command line Encryptor, default database files for MS SQL Server 2008 R2 Express and product documentation. If you don’t have any other editions of the MS SQL Server 2008 except express edition, then it is enough to download and install major package only.

Note: the major installation package doesn’t install Microsoft SQL Server 2008 R2 Express. You should download and install it separately.

If you have any other edition of the MS SQL Server 2008 and you plan to use it as storage for licensing data, then you should download and install Database Manager as well. You must create a database for the licensing data before first run of the License Manager. Please, read "Using of the Database Manager" section for database installation instructions.

If you plan to use MS SQL Server 2008 R2 Express as data storage and you have more than 1 instance of the MS SQL Express installed (2005 and 2008 R2, or 2008 and 2008 R2, for example) then, please, check that SQL Server Browser is active and running before first run of the License Manager:

  1. In the Windows Start menu go to the “All Programs->Microsoft SQL Server 2008 R2->Configuration Tools”, and run “SQL Server Configuration Manager”.
  2. Right click “SQL Server Browser” and select “Properties”.
  3. Switch to the “Service” tab.
  4. Check that “Start mode” is “Automatic” or “Manual”:
    SQL Server - Browse Service
  5. If service state is “Manual”, then don’t forget to start it before first run of the “License Manager”. It makes possible auto configuring of the database connection for MS SQL Server 2008 R2 Express.

When License Manager is run first time it makes an attempt to detect connection to the MS SQL Server 2008 R2 Express which is installed locally on your PC. If it can’t configure data connection automatically it shows warning message and switch you to the settings tab. In this case you have to configure data connection manually. You can connect License Manager to the external data service (if any). It is recommended for configurations with AWS and company or distributed configurations. Or you can connect License Manager to the instance of the MS SQL Server 2008.

You can find Data Service installation and License Manager configuring instructions in our product documentation, in the "Using of the Data Service" topic.
